Ceramics will focus on the potter’s wheel and only the potter’s wheel. I feel the students never really get enough time to really master it. Ceramics will work on different glazing techniques and mold form techniques. The students will learn the history of ceramics and famous ceramicists throughout time.

Essential Questions:

How does the planning process work when you are thinking about ceramics?
How have vessels been used historically and how do they convey meaning and serve a purpose?
How do form and design work together to create unity?

Art Materials Policy:

Students need to recognize that using art materials is a privilege. They must respect that privilege. We have amazing art materials at our school, but we have a limited supply. If students abuse the privilege, aren’t respectful towards materials, are wasteful, etc., the privilege to have access to these amazing materials will be taken away from them.

Ceramics Studio Privilege:

Ceramics class comes with the special privilege of working in the ceramics studio most classes. Students need to be responsible in the studio. They must also be careful with the supplies and the equipment. If they aren’t someone could be harmed. Student who are wasteful with materials and abuse the privilege will not be allowed to participate in studio time and be given written work instead.

Art Expectations

This is a general Ceramics Art course, I do not expect everyone to be master ceramic artist. I do expect every student to do the work and to make an effort. Work that is sloppy or doesn’t show a hardworking effort will not be accepted. Often this class, being a studio heavy course, will be graded on the technical effort demonstrated or progress achieved. Students need to show improvement or that they have become skilled at the techniques taught.

Classroom Expectations

Listen
- When the teacher is speaking, you are to be silent and listening carefully. When someone else is speaking you should be listening.
Be Prepared
- Come to class prepared. Bring you art materials. Bring your homework completed. Bring a positive hardworking attitude.
Follow Directions
- Follow ALL directions carefully and thoroughly.
Be Respectful
- Be respectful to yourself.
  - Don’t say you are bad at art. Don’t say you can’t do something. You can!
- Be respectful to others.
  - Don’t make fun of other’s art. Listen when it is other people’s turn to talk.
- Be respectful to the classroom.
  - Don’t waste materials. Don’t make a mess without cleaning it up.
It’s Okay to Make Mistakes
- You learn from them. Everyone makes mistakes, don’t be embarrassed.
